Where to Stay in Hanoi: Hotel, Hostel, or the Perfect Apartment?

Accommodation – Hanoi

Hotel, Hostel, or
Apartment?

Choosing where to stay in Hanoi is one of the most important decisions you will make for your trip. The city has accommodation for every budget and style — from backpacker hostels in the Old Quarter to five-star hotels on Hoan Kiem Lake. But for most travellers, the real choice comes down to three options: hotel, hostel, or apartment.

We are obviously biased — we run boutique apartments. But we will try to give you an honest breakdown of each option so you can make the right call for your trip.

The three options, honestly compared

Hotel

The good

  • Consistent standards
  • Daily housekeeping
  • On-site restaurant
  • 24hr front desk
  • Easy to book

The trade-offs

  • Impersonal experience
  • Higher prices
  • Often in tourist zones
  • No kitchen access
  • Generic feel
From $40-80 / night for mid-range

Hostel

The good

  • Very affordable
  • Social atmosphere
  • Great for solo travellers
  • Central locations
  • Local tips from staff

The trade-offs

  • Shared dorms
  • Limited privacy
  • Noisy common areas
  • Variable quality
  • Not ideal for couples
From $8-20 / night for a dorm bed

Apartment

The good

  • More space and privacy
  • Local neighbourhood feel
  • Personal host service
  • Better value
  • Home comforts

The trade-offs

  • Less standardised
  • No on-site restaurant
  • Quality varies widely
  • Fewer amenities
  • Must vet carefully
From $22-45 / night for a private room

Who should stay where

Choose a hotel if…

You value consistency above everything else, you are travelling on business, or you want a pool and a gym. Hotels in Hanoi have improved dramatically in recent years and the mid-range options around Hoan Kiem Lake offer good value. Just don’t expect much local character.

Choose a hostel if…

You are travelling solo on a tight budget and want to meet other travellers. The Old Quarter has dozens of well-run hostels with sociable common areas, rooftop bars and staff who know the city well. Not ideal for couples or anyone who values a good night’s sleep.

Choose an apartment if…

You want to feel like you actually live somewhere rather than passing through. A good boutique apartment gives you more space, more privacy, a better location, and a host who can give you genuinely useful local recommendations — all for less than the equivalent hotel room.

What to look for in a Hanoi apartment

Location matters more than the room. Hanoi’s neighbourhoods are very different from each other. The Old Quarter is chaotic and exciting but noisy. West Lake is calm and residential. Choose based on the kind of trip you want, not just the photos of the room.

Book direct when you can. Apartments listed on Booking.com or Airbnb charge platform fees that push prices up. The best apartments — including ours — offer better rates when you book directly via WhatsApp or email.

Check who the host is. The difference between a great apartment stay and a mediocre one is almost always the host. Look for places run by people who actually live locally and can give you real recommendations.

Read the reviews carefully. Look for mentions of communication, cleanliness, and location accuracy. Ignore the five-star reviews that just say “great stay” — the useful ones are detailed and specific.
