Three days in Hanoi is enough time to fall completely in love with this city — if you use them well. We’re... Read More
Choosing where to stay in Hanoi is one of the most important decisions of your trip — and one of the most confusing. The city has several very different neighbourhoods, each with its own personality, pace, and appeal. Pick the right one and you’ll feel like a local from day one. Pick the wrong one and you could spend half your trip in a Grab taxi.
At The Urban Hanoi, we have apartments in three of the city’s best locations: the Old Quarter, Train Street, and West Lake (Tây Hồ). This guide will help you figure out which one is right for you.
The Old Quarter is Hanoi at its most intense — and its most iconic. This maze of narrow streets, built around 36 ancient guild trades, has been the commercial and cultural heart of the city for over 1,000 years. Today it’s a sensory overload in the best possible way: street food on every corner, temple incense drifting through the air, motorbikes weaving past colonial shophouses.
The Old Quarter is busy and can be noisy, especially on weekends. The streets are narrow and full of character — but if you need quiet evenings and wide pavements, it might not be the right fit. Our apartment here puts you close to the action but tucked away from the main tourist drag, so you get the energy without the chaos.

Train Street is one of the most photographed spots in Southeast Asia — a narrow residential alley where trains pass just inches from the buildings on either side, several times a day. What started as a local curiosity became a global Instagram sensation, and staying here means you have a front-row seat every single time.
But it’s more than just the train. The Le Duan section of Train Street — where our apartment is located — sits on the edge of the Old Quarter, close enough to explore the historic centre on foot, but with a calmer, more residential feel than the heart of the Old Quarter itself.
The train passes a few times a day — it’s exciting, not disruptive. The Le Duan section is more relaxed than the main tourist stretch near Phung Hung Street, which can get very crowded. Our guests consistently say the train experience never gets old, even on day three.

West Lake is a completely different side of Hanoi — and for many visitors, a welcome one. About 15 minutes north of the Old Quarter, Tây Hồ is where Hanoi breathes. Tree-lined streets wind along the edge of the city’s largest lake, past century-old pagodas, rooftop bars, specialty coffee shops and the kind of neighbourhood restaurants that don’t appear on any tourist map.
This is where Hanoi’s expat community lives, where local creatives and young professionals spend their weekends, and where you can go for an early morning walk by the water without fighting through a crowd.
West Lake is further from the main tourist sights than the Old Quarter — you’ll want to take a Grab to Hoan Kiem Lake (about 15–20 minutes). For short trips focused on hitting every landmark, it may feel slightly disconnected. But for anyone who wants to actually live Hanoi rather than just visit it, Tây Hồ is the best base in the city.
