Tay Ho is Hanoi’s café neighbourhood. While the Old Quarter has its share of egg coffee shops and tourist-facing brunch spots, the lakeside streets of Tay Ho — particularly around West Lake — have quietly become home to some of the most interesting, beautiful and genuinely good coffee in the city.
We’ve been based here for years across our two Tay Ho properties, The Urban Tranquil and The Urban Westlake. These are the cafés we actually go to — the ones we recommend to every guest who asks where to have breakfast, where to spend a slow morning, or where to find the best view over the lake.

The best cafés in Tay Ho & West Lake
01 · Lakeside brunch
The Lakeside Terrace
The best view of West Lake in the city, full stop. A wide terrace over the water, good coffee, and a brunch menu that actually delivers. Come early on weekends — it fills up fast, and the morning light on the lake is worth setting an alarm for.
📍 Tay Ho Street · Open from 7:30am · Best for: sunrise breakfast, slow mornings
02 · Specialty coffee
The Neighbourhood Roaster
A small-batch roastery tucked into one of Tay Ho’s quieter lanes. They source from Vietnamese highland farms and take their process seriously without being precious about it. The cold brew is exceptional. Good wifi, quiet enough to work, and the staff actually know coffee.
📍 Xuan Dieu Street · Open from 8am · Best for: working, solo visits, serious coffee
03 · Weekend brunch
The Tay Ho Kitchen
A favourite with the neighbourhood crowd on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The eggs benedict are genuinely good, the space is warm and unhurried, and they do a Vietnamese-French fusion menu that actually works. Book ahead on weekends or expect a wait.
📍 Au Co Street · Open from 8:30am · Best for: weekend brunch, groups
04 · Sunset drinks
The Lakefront
Not strictly a café — more of a late-afternoon drinks and light food spot — but the West Lake views at golden hour are spectacular. Order a bia hơi or a fresh coconut, settle in, and watch the light change. One of those Hanoi moments you don’t forget easily.
📍 West Lake waterfront · Open from 3pm · Best for: sunset, couples, slow evenings
05 · Egg coffee
The Tay Ho Egg Coffee House
Yes, you can get egg coffee in Tay Ho — and this is the best version in the neighbourhood. Thicker, richer and less sweet than the tourist versions near Hoan Kiem. Served in a small, unpretentious space with locals rather than tour groups. A properly Hanoian experience.
📍 Thuy Khue Street · Open from 7am · Best for: breakfast, first-timers, authentic experience
A few things worth knowing first
The best time to visit
Tay Ho cafés are at their best on weekend mornings, when the neighbourhood comes alive with locals brunching and the lakeside paths are busy with joggers and families. Weekday mornings are quieter and often better for working. Avoid 12–2pm on weekdays when many smaller spots close for lunch.
Getting there from our properties
If you’re staying at The Urban Tranquil, the West Lake waterfront is a 3-minute walk. If you’re at The Urban Westlake, Van Cao Street’s cafés are right on your doorstep. Most of these spots are within a 10-minute walk of both properties.
What to order
Beyond coffee, look for bánh mì trứng (egg baguette) at street carts for around 20,000 VND — one of the best breakfasts in the city. Most of the cafés above serve some version of Vietnamese breakfast alongside their coffee menus.
